War is over

What is the War is over trend?

Creators pair the John Lennon holiday anthem with a text overlay reading "THE WAR IS OVER:" followed by whatever personal win they are celebrating. The contrast between the triumphant choir swell and an ordinary victory is what makes the format land. Brands use it to announce a drop, a restock, a sold-out item returning, or the end of a long wait.

Origin

The "War Is Over" TikTok trend uses the chorus from "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)," a song recorded by John Lennon and Yoko Ono with the Harlem Community Choir and released on Apple Records on December 1, 1971. The song originated as an extension of Lennon and Ono's 1969 international peace campaign, during which posters reading "War Is Over! If You Want It" were placed in twelve cities worldwide. On TikTok, the trend's earliest documented viral moment came on October 10, 2021, when user @supremekrispykream posted a video pairing the song's chorus with a Battlefield 1 video game cutscene referencing the "Immortal Snail" meme, which accumulated over 2 million views. The format evolved into a broadly celebratory template in which creators overlay on-screen text declaring "THE WAR IS OVER:" followed by a personal victory. The trend received additional cultural attention in 2024 when the animated short film "WAR IS OVER! Inspired by the Music of John and Yoko" won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 96th Academy Awards, renewing mainstream awareness of the song.
