Cuts & transitions

J-cut

What is J-cut?

A J-cut is an edit where the audio from the next shot begins before the picture cuts to it, so the viewer hears the incoming scene's sound while still watching the current footage. On a timeline the audio track of the incoming clip extends to the left under the outgoing video, forming a J shape.

When you'd use it

  1. 1When you want the viewer's ear to arrive at the next scene before their eye does.
  2. 2When transitioning between two interview subjects and the incoming speaker's voice should set up the cut.
  3. 3When ambient sound from the next scene can create anticipation before the picture changes.
  4. 4When a hard cut between two locations would feel choppy and audio can smooth the transition.

Example

A food creator starts the sound of a sizzling pan one second before cutting from a grocery haul to the cooking scene. Viewers hear the cook before they see it, giving the transition energy without a graphic effect.

Use cases

  1. 1Letting the audio from a product demo clip begin while the final frame of a spokesperson shot is still visible.
  2. 2Bringing in a voiceover from the next segment before cutting away from the current B-roll.
  3. 3Starting the next interviewee's answer in audio before the picture switches to their face.
