Smash cut
What is Smash cut?
A smash cut is an abrupt, jarring transition from one scene to a drastically different one, timed for deliberate emotional, comedic, or dramatic effect. It differs from a plain hard cut in that the contrast between the two scenes is the point, often landing at the peak of tension in the outgoing shot.
When you'd use it
- 1When a text setup ends and the cut should slam straight into the action it promised.
- 2When you want to punctuate a build-up with an unexpected visual or sonic change.
- 3When the punchline of a comedic moment lands hardest by cutting away at peak tension.
- 4When a dramatic reveal needs to hit the viewer without warning.
Example
A fitness creator closes with 'and after six months of consistency...' at high emotional pitch, then smash cuts to themselves sitting on the couch eating chips. The contrast collapses the inspirational setup and gets the laugh in under five seconds.
Use cases
- 1Cutting mid-sentence from a calm product testimonial to a loud, high-energy product shot.
- 2Jumping from a slow, quiet atmospheric scene directly to a bold title card at full volume.
- 3Breaking out of a tense build-up with an abrupt cut to the finished result.
